The 30-week Family Literacy program offers adults the opportunity to complete their GED (high school diploma), improve their English language ability, develop their parenting skills, and learn how to become full partners in their child's education.
This program meets 11:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Indian Valley YMCA, 375 Hartford Turnpike, Route 30, Vernon, CT. The GED classes meet Mondays,Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. ESL classes meet Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Both groups meet together on Wednesdays for parenting workshops, nutrition, "Raising Readers," "Music Together," guest speakers, and field trips.
YMCA staff will engage the children in developmentally appropriate activities. Parents are their children's first and most important teachers and this program will give them additional tools to improve their success in school and in life. This Vernon Regional Adult Based Education program, a joint effort with Family Resource Centers, is administered through Eastern Connecticut Health network (ECHN), Kidsafe, and the Indian Valley YMCA.
